Welsh fans in kilts at the rugby yesterday

So yesterday I was at the Scotland vs Wales game in Edinburgh and I was surprised at how many Welsh fans now wear kilts of various tartans to the rugby - both young and old. I would say 15-20% of Welsh fans seemed to be wearing a kilt with their Wales shirt. On the flip side, there seemed to be fewer Scottish fans wearing kilts than normal - perhaps 40%(I was of course wearing mine).

Has anyone else noticed this growing trend of kilt wearing amongst Welsh rugby fans? I kept meaning to chat to one of the fans to ask about the growing trend but alas I had consumed one too many pints! It's great to see and I hope it is something that will become more popular amongst the Welsh fans. There was however one kilt which was a Welsh flag which was rather ugly in my opinion - I much prefer a kilt to be in a tartan (which the majority were)

Ah yes, I am told it is the cool new thing to do in Wales! They even ran this cartoon about it back in March:

Interesting to hear the Welsh Rugby fans are going for the kilt.

Also as interesting was the cartoon, @WalesLax ! Can you tell me (link) where it was published?

I just did a blog entry on a bit of the Welsh Tartan / Accessory bits, but focused more on the differences between the Scots and Welsh tartans: http://www.usakilts.com/blog/welsh-kilts.html

Sorry about that! In my haste to post, I forgot to give credit! It was published in the South Wales Echo; my cousin sent me the picture in the lead up to 6 Nations.

kiltlad82, it's good to see the Welsh starting to realize how cool they can look.

Rocky, thanks for an interesting post. I'm looking forward to getting my USAK Lewis Wales Tartan Cilt and seeing how it looks in comparison to the Scottish tartans.

Indeed, the Welsh Cilt is growing very fast in popularity for rugby matches (as well as for weddings). I went on Sunday to watch the match in Cardiff city centre on a big screen and likewise there were dozens and dozens of Welsh wearing them around town too .... also there were several large groups of Scots on what looked like stag weekends who also were all wearing kilts. As it happened, when I walked into the pub and was standing at the bar waiting to be served, there was a group of at least 15 Scots sat close all Kilted who welcomed me to join them to watch the match ... which I did ... we had a laugh, watched the match, and it made for a great social gathering. So indeed, Cardiff last Sunday, certainly had a very large Cilt/Kilt population.
