eBay - Antique Girl's and Boy's tartan outfit

Offered on eBay by someone in the US this outfit is mis-described. It's not a Girl's and Boy's outfit, the former is a kilt and not a skirt.

Probably dates to c1860-80, possibly 10 years later. An interesting couple of outfits but unrealistic asking price.

Same seller as the other item? Oh, no ~ on second thought, likely not, given the asking price. Silly me.

The outfit on the right reminds me of a 'Pearly King', a London tradition of 'Pearly Kings' and 'Pearly Queens' where men and women dress in outfits covered in buttons.
The Kilt is my delight !

You'd think they could work out that the jacket with the square buttons goes with the waistcoat with the square buttons and that the jacket with the piping goes with the trousers with the piping.

The skirt is described as a jumper, a jumper is also called a pinafore in school uniform terminology. It seems as if this is a skirt with an upper piece and it could be for a girl as girls did wear male style highland dress and I believe they were wearing the same kit as the boys for highland dancing at least up to the mid 20th century. As this costume could be from the same era that girls were wearing sailor outfits then it's possible that this is a girl's costume based on highland attire.

Also, as most of the photos don't show for me, the photo appears to be reversed, the "kilt" and coats are all overlapping the wrong way.
