    First kilted outing

    Greetings Rabble,

last weekend I took a chance and wore my kilt for the 50th birthday of my wife's aunt. This marked the first time I wore the kilt outside of a circle of friends & colleagues, so I was slightly nervous but confident that the wool would work its magic. What can I say - it certainly did. Dress code was casual-dressy, so I wore my 8-yard Aberdeen Forever, Sporran + chain, charcoal hose with tartan flashes, belt and a dress shirt, no tie, with nondescript black shoes.

As expected, the kilt drew looks all night, as well as the question "what's under it". Interestingly, three of four people/groups who wanted to know sent surrogates to ask.

It was my first time of dancing in a heavy kilt, which surprised me by working very well. I was slightly hesitant at first, but the kilt was made to swing around, so I did. Fun!

All in all, it was a great evening. I have just a blurry picture - this was around 3:30 at night after getting home again, and inebriation made people's photographic skills deteriorate. But the evening was definitely encouraging to wear the kilt more.

One thing I want to change with this look: get solid colored flashes (maybe blue, maybe gold). But as an outfit, this worked well for the occasion.

    Cheers,
    Octobrachium

Ya' look first rate! For dancing, slide the sporran to one hip. Ye'll maybe find that's easier if you swap out the chain for a strap.

    Congratulations.

    What's under the kilt?

    - Shoes & socks.

    BWAHAHAHA!!! Great answers!
Never run or do jumping jacks while wearing a heavy sporran

Fr. B, sliding just the sporran to one side for close/slow dancing might be a bit easier than the whole kilt.

Duh! That's what I meant. Thanks for the correction; I'll edit above.

That's what I figured. Just wanted to be sure it was clarified.

Thanks! A sporran belt is on my list, that will make the slide-to-side easier. Though I had no sporran related trouble.

Tarheel - will do, though I have no good feeling yet which color hose will go well with the tartan. But trying out is half the fun!

For hose colors, I recommend something in your tartan, something that goes with your shirt, vest, or jacket (depending on how dressed up you are) or just generally something a bit muted. I like my charcoal grey hose for an easy "match".

Well, your hose look to me to be black, which I believe go fine with the tartan of your kilt. I think the others are suggesting, not that your hose don't match or look good, but that other colors might make your ensemble more interesting, so to speak.

I'll second jose995 in that I think your hose are just fine.
