Tartan to a cèilidh?
Hi!
I'm invited to a cèilidh and since I'm not Scottish I was wondering what to wear. Or rather, if it would be ok for me to wear my favourite dress...
It's a vintage style swing dress (below knee) in the Black Watch tartan. I wear it to different occations in my home country since it's always appropriate, very comfy and works well with different types of dress codes. And I get a lot of compliments on it, too. So, would it be offensive to Scots if I wore it? I'm hoping it would be seen as respectful, since I really love Scotland, but you never know.  I have the same dress in the Stewart Dress (Modern) tartan but I don't think that's a "universal" tartan, so I guess that's def not an option. 
I would really, really appreciate your thoughts on the matter!

Welcome to the forum. I think it would be very appropriate to wear either of them. Both the BW and the RS have through time become “universal” tartans.

Welcome from the Northeast of Scotland.
I'm assuming the ceilidh is in Scotland and I'm sure Scots would be very happy if you wore either tartan - it would be so nice to have a Swedish lady present and you will soon learn our dances. Doesn't matter if you get them a little bit wrong - everyone does!

Sounds lovely.
Wear petticoats for the dancing and to look fabulous!
I love the vintage style swing dresses in Tartan.
Just don’t go overboard with sashes and accessories in tartan, have plain solid colour shoes bag etc ... let the dress stand out.

The Black Watch is a universal (or government) tartan, and traditionally those without their own (or anyone) can wear it. It is appropriate for all subjects of the Queen to wear Royal Stewart.

Welcome new friend. My son does swing dancing and his partners use patterned dress but never tartan. I like the idea of either one you choose and am sure either will be well received.
