Recommended Kiltmakers Please !
Please help ! I'm getting married in February and need to have a kilt made. I'm at a loss to know which Kiltmaker to use. Most of the ones on the internet seem impressive.
At the moment I'm edging towards Goffrey kilts of Edinburgh mainly because their quality looks good and also because they habe a monthly fitting service in London which is close to where I'm based at this time. Does anyone have any views - good or bad - on this company please?.
Also what weight would you suggest ? Will be wearing the complete Evening formal ensemble.
Many thanks and king regards,
Craig.

Hi, and congratulations on your impending nuptuals!!
Where Highland wear is concerned, you really cannot go wrong with Geoffrey. Excellent service, and excellent product. I also like Kinloch Anderson for the same reasons.
Where kilt weight is concerned, consider this discussion:

Congratulations Craigyboy,
If it helps with the weight, the kilt I have on order from Kathys Kilts (probably not an option for you since she's in New Mexico USA) will be 11 ounce.
While the weight was determined by the availability of the tartan I wanted, since I live in Arizona where its pretty hot in the summer 11 oz seemed like a good idea for me.
Does your lady have a single sister who'd like to visit the "old west?"

Craigboy,
I am in the same sort of situation. I thought I had made up my mind, then I found this forum! You will be very happy to wear a kilt to your wedding. My wife and I couldn't find/get one in time for our wedding, and boy do we regret it...
I had it narrowed down to the following for a traditional kilt:
j. higgins
alexis malcolm
Now I have to include
the kilt store
hector russell
kathy lare
I think what its going to come down to at this point is the nearest delivery date.
Most of the prices of the above-mentioned are fairly close, so that is not as big a factor.
Good Luck and Congratulations!

Hi Craig,
I can thoroughly recommend Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd of Edinburgh and, yes, you are correct, they do have a regular London visit - usually at weekends. They take a showroom at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel on Bayswater Road (Queensway tube station!)about every five weeks. Unfortunately, you have just missed them as Howie and John were there last weekend. Their next appearance is on 11th and 12th December, but you should call the Edinburgh office to make an appointment, as they get SO busy. (Call: 0131 557 0256). I'll be going there on the Saturday to pick up a new "21st Century Kilt" - my 16th from that family 'stable' (11 x "TFCK" and 4 x Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd). Apart from the kilts, I have had two Argyll Day Jackets and my Prince Charlie from them.
Their quality is superb, as is that of this site's sponsor: www.KiltStore.net, from whom I have had two kilts and have another on order.
As far as weight is concerned: here in the UK the best is generally 16/17 ozs for year-round wear, but it all depends upon what events/occasions (other than your wedding) you might want to be wearing it - not, OF COURSE, that you should restrict your kilt wearing to events and occasions ....... every day is what you should be aiming for! 8) 8)
Photos of all my kilts are in my Photo Album - link below.
I hope that has helped you a little.
By the way, if you are persuaded to order from abroad instead, beware the additional VAT, Import Duties and other charges that are liable to be levied at the time of import into the UK! Just a thought!

Well... there you have it! When Hamish talks about kilts... people listen. I know how much I wear, appreciate, revere, and admire my favorite kilt from The House of Edgar in Scotland.
As for buying abroad: DON'T!
You're talking about one of the most important days in your life, and you deserve to get a "proper" kilt for the occasion.
I'm not about to go to Scotland to buy Cowboy Boots!

Craig,
It is me again! You have not told us whether you are already an experienced kilt wearer, or whether your 'Wedding Kilt' will be your 'first timer'. You say you are based near London, but do not say where that might be.
Not that I am prying - you do not have to tell us any more than you already have - but if you'd like to meet up sometime, perhaps in London, for a chat and a drink (or two), just let me know. I live in West Sussex and pop up to London several times a year to meet other kilties, so it would be easily done.
As I hope you have already discovered, we are a friendly lot here at "X Marks the Scot", and we're all pleased to offer help, advice and comradeship when required.

Hi Craig,
I think you've made a good choice with Geoffrey Taylor Kilts.
I recommend you take Hamish up on his offer and meet with him. Apart from being the guy we all look to for advise regarding kilts, he has a very good eye for accessories and subtle colour matching.
(See if you can talk him into writing a kilt book!)
