Wanted: Lovat green tweed Argyle-type jacket and waistcoat, 44S

Our grandson is getting married in May, and I got an enthusiastic approval to wear a kilt. I’m not in the wedding party, so I don’t want to go full Prince Charlie. What I’m seeking is an Argyll-type lovat green tweed jacket and waistcoat. Ideally, it would be even simpler than the typical Argyll—I’d prefer no epaulets, plain pocket flaps, and plain cuffs, but I realize I can’t necessarily be that fussy. I wear a 44 short. The wrinkle is that I’m on a very limited budget, so I’m looking for well taken-care-of used, or ex-hire. I want to avoid Pakistan products, I’d prefer honest Scottish tweed. I live in the US. I know I can check in with a place like Ministry of Tartan, but before I incur international shipping charges and any possible tariffs (are there tariffs on used items?), I thought I’d first throw a query up here and see if I can scare one up domestically.

Almost certainly this is not what you wanted to hear (and anyway, my Argyll is burdened with the metal buttons Epaulettes, etc.)

I thought briefly of loaning you mine, but I've not lived in CT since graduating from medical school 53 years ago, and sending mine on a long round-trip voyage would probably impact its availability for my own use, because I wear mine quite often, but good luck!

One other possibility, however, depending on WHEN the wedding is and WHERE your nearest highlands games will be held, if the games are an established local event there likely will be vendors selling used clothing (probably much of it ex-hire) for a tiny fraction of original retail pricing. I garnered my own PC and matching waistcoat from two DIFFERENT vendors at such an event in the tiny town of Hamilton, MT 4 years ago, and while some here would recognize them as not quite perfect, "not quite" is certainly good enough for the 2-3 times per year I wear mine. Alternatively, you might graze the Scottish (or American) retailers for sales of ex-hire clothing.

I thank you for at least considering sending yours along! The wedding is at the beginning of May, and we don’t have Highland Games here until the fall. I can certainly order from abroad (Ministy of Tartan lists some possibilities) but I’m hoping to avoid international shipping if I can, and thought I’d throw a flare up here first.

On the USA Kilts site you can modify the "Tweed Jacket and Vest - Custom" offer to omit the epaulettes, military style cuffs, etc.

If I'm not mistaken, the style you are looking for is sometimes called a "Wallace" jacket - essentially a normal Saxon sport coat cut to go with the kilt.

But buying what is essentially a bespoke jacket isn't much help if you're really looking to save money, though. Sorry about that
