Re: Having trouble with google finding Xmarks?
I use Firefox 10.0.2, but I don't think the version matters. In my bookmarks, right at the top, is a folder I have named AAAA Start. Inside are all the links I want to open when I first start up.
One click on the bookmark tab and everything opens as dropdown menus. Second click on "Open all in Tabs" and it is job done. My six favourites are waiting for a click. Whichever one is at the top of the list gets opened. I have it set for eMails, but I could just as well have it set for X Marks.
Regards
Chas

Aha! That's the best explanation, yet, to explain why everyone seems to be getting somewhat different results.
Also, we now know that MacMillan's son is spending far too much time on Facebook.
By the way, have you checked out the pictures of the dried grub worms I found in my yard and that I just posted on my Facebook page.

Re: Having trouble with google finding Xmarks?
I have an Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer running Firefox. There is a "Most Visited" tab on the top toolbar. All I have to do is click on it and the dropdown lists all the sites I visit the most, click on the Saltire icon with the word KILTS next to it and I'm the X Marks main page. No problem.

Re: Having trouble with google finding Xmarks?
I use this addon for firefox.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...rc=userprofile
So all my favorite sites are available with one click. You can arrange them alphabetically and rename/shorten the name that is on the button.

Re: Having trouble with google finding Xmarks?
I don't like the favorites bar thing, so I keep my links in a HTML doc on my destop and edit it when I need to add or change things. Guess I'm weird.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I don't think you're weird. I just can't picture how that works.
How do you select a desired web page from its link in your HTML doc? Do you cut and paste it into the address bar of your browser, or is their an automated way to achieve the same effect?

Ok, with HTML 5 it's a bit easier to type up an HTML doc that will load into a supporting browser.
You open a text editor like notepad and type:
<html>
<title> links</title
<body>
<p>
<a href="XMTS address on the web from the address bar is copy and pasted here">
X Marks the Scot Home Page
</a>
</p>
</body></html>
***
I don't want the VB program to put url tags on the address so I didn't put it in there.
You could copy and paste that code into a notepad file, then change the end tag of the file name ".txt" to ".htm" or "html," and it would open up in your default browser with the link displayed as the text "X Marks the Scot Home Page" a lot like using the url tags in a post here on the forum.
You can make lists of these links or arrange them how ever you want with different HTML tags and so on.
I hope that made some kind of sense, I know I don't explain things well.

Yes, it does makes sense, and thanks for explaining it. I now understand the technique you are using, though some of the programming details elude me. I wrote lower-level code in the "Mother Tongue" - Fortran in the old days, and later in C and in script languages like Perl, Python, etc.
I do not know Visual Basic, and the syntax of html is a bit foreign to me. But, in general I see nothing "wrong" with what you are doing, since you have the technical capability to do it. If it works for you, then that's all that matters.

Re: Having trouble with google finding Xmarks?
MacMillan's son ,
There is an even easier way to get to XMarks than I explained earlier .
1. Get to the XMarks home page in whatever method you choose .
2. Once there , put your mouse arrow in some blank area on the page and right click .
3. You will have a small window that pops up that has various options . If you have one of the newer versions of Windows , one of the selections will be " Create a Shortcut " . Click on that and an XMarks icon will be automatically be sent to your desktop .
If you have one of the older versions of Windows , one of the selections in that window will be " Send To " . If you see that selection , put your arrow on it and another box will appear and one of those selections will be " Desktop " . Click on " Desktop " and now you will have an XMarks icon on your desktop.
Either way , old version or new version , you now have an XMarks icon on your desktop . No typing in the address bar , no going to a search engine like Google . All you have to do is set down in front of your PC at any time of day , look at your PC desktop and click on the XMarks icon and bam , you're there .
Hope this helps .
Regards , Mike
