It's a great movie, though not for everyone.

I'd really recommend O Brother Where Art Thou and No Country for Old Men as well.

I've seen O Brother... Awesome film with an amazing soundtrack. Wouldn't really call it a family film though. There is a bit of nudity in it.

Like scotch, the Coen Brother's movies are an aquired taste and I have aquired a taste for both though many people that I lend their movies to do not hold my high opinion of them. To each his own. Long live the Dude!

    Re: Lebowski?

My daughter sat down and watched It Happened One Night with Clark Gable a few months before she saw O Brother, Where Art Thou so I could point out why I always think of George Clooney as a latter day Gable...suave and FUNNY.

There's also a cinematic allusion at work in the title of the movie. If you've seen the 1941 movie Sullivan's Travels, after his experiences dealing with Depression Era America, the protagonist wants to make a movie called O Brother Where Art Thou. Sullivan's Travels being one of my favorite movies since childhood, it was a slam dunk that I had to see the Coen Brothers' movie.

So in the original "alternative to gentleman" thread, I believe I was the first to mention Lebowski, so blame or applaud me.

Yes, I think we're seeing the "reality" right now in the other thread. One more page-long rant and the alternative to "Gentleman" will have to be changed from "Kilted Lebowski" to "Kilted Sobchak"

I suppose that's based on a value judgement: that a gentleman somehow has more intrinsic worth as a human being than a Sobchak. This creates a paradox because a gentleman would never make such an assumption....a gentleman would probably even refrain from pointing out that such a distinction could even be made. So while I think that there are some people out there who aspire to be gentlemen (or at least be thought to be a gentleman), there are a lot more Lebowskis and Sobchaks out there than you'd think.

    Obviously, you're not a golfer.

Yep, the wood chipper one. The first time I saw it I was appalled; then I fell in love with it.
