A rose among the thorns! This photo was taken towards the latter part of the 1930s, going by the appearance of Young Duart ( Sir Charles Maclean of Duart and Morvern, later Lord Maclean ). He succeeded to the chiefship in Nov of 1936. I cannot tell if those are two silver feathers on his crest badge ( which would indicate it is pre Nov 1936 ) or some method to secure a plant badge. Two feathers wouldn't be really correct for the heir in any case. The photo of my father at the Argyllshire Gathering was taken a year or two before this one. I think this photo also shows Young Campbell of Dunstaffnage (3rd from right), who is a bit younger in the pic with my father.

    Sandy,

I love the photo featuring your father! This photo is also wonderful! I love their dress - look at the correct use of day plaids -definitely my cup of tea and what I try to emulate.

    Cheers,

So the youngster in the kilt of a different tartan was your dad, Sandy? That’s a picture to be proud of!

    Cool about that Oban photo!

Did y'all notice that few men are wearing flashes? This is on all fours with The Highlanders of Scotland. Also most of the hose are a similar middle shade.

Also note the interesting ghillies worn by the gent at centre.

    Mike,

No, I dont believe so. I believe Sandy is referring to another superb photo that has indeed been uploaded to the forum as well. It is an old photo taken at the Argyllshire Gathering and featuring Sandy's father.

    Cheers,

They are more than likely wearing fawn/beige coloured hose (I have worn them quite a bit too - they tend to go well with any tartan) as that was very popular back then - just look at various advertisements and books regarding Highland dress during this particular time period, and you can easily see how popular this colour of hose really was. I like the look of the hose without flashes, but just a garter - unseen - holding up the hose. The ghillies look good too, especially since the grotesque, thick soled versions had not been invented yet!

    Cheers,
