Hi,
Looks like Robertson Hunting is a bit of an awkward one due to its large sett. See the link here:-

I don't see why it couldn't be pleated to the red stripe 'military style' though, with one red stripe on each pleat, as there's a red stripe every half sett. It's been done before here:-

If I were you I'd phone the kiltmaker up again, show them the picture from the thread above, and tell them to do it how you want it done!

Excellent advice, Calgacus.
Welcome aboard, mate! My bonnie wife is of Robertson of Struan descent and absolutely adores the Robertson 'hunting' tartan. I think pleating to the red stripes would be just fine and very smart as well.
Best of luck,

The information about only being able to pleat to the white stripe is absolute nonsense, I'm afraid. Infact, pleating to the white would use a huge amount of cloth in this sett. By comparison, the depth of the pleats would be halved pleating to the red. My Lochcarron Strome hunting Robertson, pleated to the red stripe has twenty eight pleats and can be seen on the second link posted by Calgacus. I'd definitely speak to the kiltmaker, not just one of the shop assistants, who I think has misled you. Good luck!
Steve.

MacKenzie and Robertson Hunting are identical except for reversing the red and white stripes. Might she have been imagining MacKenzie in her mind?
Plus one to AA's post (great looking kilts, btw, mine is identical except in the modern colours).

Cousin Bren raises a very good point. I can think of no other reason why she feels it not possible to pleat to the red stripe.
Of course it is entirely possible to pleat to the white line with Robertson Hunting and as I usually find, the information, along with a picture or two is usually to be found on this mighty forum: Posts 19 to 24, http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=14126

Perhaps you might want to check with other kiltmakers, whether in your area or on-line.

Personally, I think it would look better to the red stripe, plus you'd need an awful lot of material to make it to the white stripe.
I really think they have misunderstood what you want and that you should get back in touch with them to sort it out, otherwise you will very likely regret it. A kilt is not a cheap item and it will last you many years, so it makes sense to get it right from the outset.
What part of Scotland are you in?
