I'll cast my vote for linen. Here in Florida, with day temperatures approaching 100 degrees and relative humidity approaching 100 percent, it is the coolest possible material.
I like the ones Orvis sells. In addition to some nice solids, they have spiffy houndstooth patterns that look really good to my eye.

Plain solid colour business style shirt, mostly light blue (I have a wardrobe full from before I retired), open neck and rolled up sleeves. Works in all our Queensland temperatures, high single digits to high 30s Celsius. I've never been one for T-shirts or polo/sports shirts - far too "clingy".

I wear t shirts or polo shirts, if I want to dress up a bit, I wear a short sleeve cotton shirt. I will leave the belt off in really hot weather as a thick bit of leather round your middle in the heat can be uncomfortable. I live in a hot country so I'm geared up the opposite to you and my new casual 5 yard 14 Oz kilt is perfect for the heat.

I will add this picture also. Now that I have less hair on my head I have to wear a hat that covers my head and ears to keep from sun burn. I don't wear the pith helmet, or more of a sun helmet in this case, very often. I have softer cotton sun hat that I wear more than this one. Since the Pith Helmet showed up in earlier posts I will add this to the warm weather wardrobe. This picture was taken at the Kentucky "Scottish Weekend in 2012. The last year for the event. Ladies from the Kentucky Cloggers stopped by for a picture.
Also, the socks are lighter weight knee socks rather than the Lewis kilt hose. I think these are Gold Toe knee socks if I recall.

Yes, socks or hose are becoming an issue and it's only May!

Rich: Cool pics, ... literally. John
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I have tended to go with a golf shirt, where ChuckTN is with Kyle and others that start with jacket/waistcoat/long sleeve shirt/tie and remove layers as the day heats up.

I have been known to go with jacket/long sleeve shirt/tie if it's not too hot and humid (and I have to participate in Scottish Country dance demos, where we usually wear long sleeve shirt and tie). Notice Cardinal chose long sleeve shirt with rolled-up sleeves.

Jawn looks quite comfortable in tee shirt.

I would suggest that if it feels comfortable and you stand in front of the mirror and like what you see, wear it.
