If you can't make Kilt Kamp have you looked at the Braemar camp? You might find the dates better suited.

Okay, Folks, .... less that 2 months to the start of Kilt Kamp. Hopefully everyone has made arrangements for transportation and lodging. You can plan on us feeding you for breakfast and lunch on the first day, and then breakfast for the remaining days. (This will be a continental breakfast -- pastries, fruit, cereal, stuff like that.) That evening is Symphony Splash for those who wish to wander down to the Inner Harbour and find something to eat down there; there are also some local pubs, coffee shops, etc.
For the pipers in the area, Barb is bringing her pipes. So maybe we can have a short intermission of "entertainment" (no pressure, Barb) sometime during the week. I will have earplugs that I can hand out (being an audiologist, I always carry them with me).
Please let us know if you have further questions or needs!

kiltedknome, you are a mind-reader. I just booked my flights this afternoon. Is there a good shuttle from the airport to downtown hotels?

Send the particulars of the flight and the hotel to the shop (see e-mail from earlier correspondence) and we'll see what we can figure out.

If everyone who is flying into Victoria could send us your arrival time, perhaps we can double up runs to and from the airport.

One day I'll get to one of these Camps... I'm not willing to learn on my own, don't want to end up frustrated and messing up a kilt ;)

I will also bring my pipes.
Hope to have a few tunes under my belt by kilt Kamp. The month before I am at Bagpipe camp!

I'd like to hear from former campers, or those who have made reservations about lodging in Victoria. All I need is a spartan place with a clean bed and bathroom. I'll be coming to learn kilt making, not for a luxury vacation. I'll be driving out. I've communicated with Steve about it, but would appreciate traffic tips from experienced drivers in Canada. I'm not sure how to deal with speed limits posted in kilometers per hour. My speedometer goes up to 160mph, but I have no idea what that is in kph.

Just multiply mph by .6 to get k/hr. So 100k/hr is the same as 60 mph. A quicker way is to take half the speed in mph and add back 10%.
I took my car to Victoria for Kamp two years ago and never drove it other than to and from the ferry when I got there and left.

30 kph = 18 mph - While is School zones and residential streets.
50 kph = 31 mph - This is the default speed on city streets.
60 kph = 37 mph
70 kph = 43 mph - The average limit on Vancouver Island.
80 kph = 50 mph
90 kph = 56 mph - About the max limit on the Island.
100 kph = 63 mph About the max limit you will find in BC.
For a quick, in your head calculation, drop the last zero in kph and multiply by 6. i.e. 60 kph = 6 X 6 = 36 mph.
1 Kilometer = .62 mile. The driving distance from Bellingham to Victoria is 131 kilometers or 81 miles.
You will have a straight shot from Bellingham to the border crossing at the Peace Arch. Expect anything from 20 min to 1 hour in line to cross the border.
Have your passport ready and tell them if you are bringing any alcohol or tobacco products. You will not have to declare your kiltmaking supplies.
From the border crossing it is just under an hour to the ferry terminal at Tswassen. The top speed you will see is 100 kph or 63 mph.
The ferry crossing is 90 min.
Get your camera ready for the transit of active pass. It is a Pass between two islands about 300 to 500 yards wide. The view is worth the trip.
You may see Bald Eagle, seal, and if lucky, Orca. They will make an announcemant if a pod of Orca is sighted.
When you offload from the ferry the speed will be 80 kph or 50 mph till the first traffic light.
Then it will go up to 90 kph or 56 mph. This will only last for 10 miles.
The speed will drop back down to 80 kph or 50 mph till you get into town and then drop again to 50 kph or 31 mph in town.
At all times in BC -
Seatbelts are mandatory.
NO hand held electronic devices while driving.
Right turn on red allowed unless posted.
A flashing green light denotes a pedestrian controlled signal.
You will also notice flashing yellow warning signs before some light controlled intersections in BC. They will start flashing if the light will change by the time you get to the intersection.
Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way.
Drivers up here actually use turn signals.
If in doubt slow down and act like you are in a small town.
Do you have a SatNav? Do you need directions?
