Tartan with No Sporran

I don't wear the sporran at home only when I am going out I put one on

Likewise, I always put one on to go out. At home: just a small pouch worn at the side to carry mobile and hankie and sometimes small camera, with a pen knife on the other side of the belt.

If the kilt was, for example a Freedom Kilt, in tartan, that had both a front apron pocket and slash pockets, then I might opt not to wear a sporran.

With my contemporary kilts...meaning camouflage or solid-color twill kilts, I use a black jansport bum bag as the "holder" for wallet, keys, cellphone and so on.

BTW, pay no heed to the guys saying "it's not traditional". This is the CONTEMPORARY KILT FORUM, eh?

Whenever this thread pops back up it makes me think of the tartan Bilt Kilt, which I mentioned way back on post #46 of this thread... I got to see one in the flesh once at Burnett's and Struth in Barrie, Ontario. It was a cargo/utility kilt made in all 16 oz worsted wool, but I can't remember what tartan. Man, oh man, was it heavy-duty and awesome! It appears, however, that they don't make an all tartan model anymore...

Some kilts, even those looking constructed of tartan and looking very "traditional", are constructed with pockets. In that case, the wearing of a sporran is not a necessity but a fashion decision. Some viewers who always equate tartan with sporran may find that unsettling, but that is their issue. I have a tartan kilt with pockets. When I dress up and want to look more "traditional", I put a nice sporran on. When I pair it with a t-shirt or otherwise casual clothing, I find I can store my stuff in my pockets and it feels right. This is one of the joys of wearing a kilt in a more contemporary fashion -- choices!

I think a tartan kilt looks incomplete without a sporran, and a sporran provides useful flap control on a breezy day. That said, I don't wear a sporran for kilted hiking or contradancing, but those are activities for which I empty my front pockets if I'm wearing pants.
