Old Photo mashup - The Games 1912-1962

I'm loving this photo set for the Athletics end of it but I'm sure you traditional clothing lads and lasses will enjoy it, too. There are lots of pictures of regimental kit and civilian kilt clothing during the period.

Thanks, Alan. Those were extremely interesting. Some of the cabers looked impossibly long. (and that final shot of the two men wrestling seems to answer the question of what is worn beneath the kilt! It looks like some of the women in the background are quite attentive!)
Studies have shown that women who gain a few pounds live longer than men who mention it.

No concerns about health and safety in those days!

    Wow!!

    WOW!

Those are some amazing photos of Athletics and dancing (kinda shows their isn't that much difference between the two)

The only thing that I am curious about is the one photo of the shot putt where the shot putt is on a cable. I've never heard or seen of such a thing. Is this an antiquated version of the event or a Scottish variant?

    Cheers Friend

That is the Hammer throw, a variant of the hammer throw with a solid shaft, the Hammer with cable is an Olympic event and has been since 1900.
The USA won the gold at the Olympics from 1900 to 1924, but not since.

Yes, I saw that and thought it was odd as well. Note that the fellow holding the wire hammer is probably not an athlete. He's not built like one and he's not standing in a stable position. Considering his kit, he's probably a piper, and someone handed him a wire hammer.

Just for comparison...here's a Scottish hammer throw, narrating by top flight Pro, Matt Vincent.

    Here's a wire hammer throw, Koji Murofushi..silver medalist in 2004 and 2008 I believe.

Nice photos. I noted how much more lean the athletes were than today.

Great photos! I loved some of the traditional outfits and those tweeds from the 30's. Compare and contrast: the heavy athletes are a lot leaner and more cut, not as beefy as our modern boys. The highland dancing: no women appear--as the father of a highland dancer, I can tell you the female-male ratio today is at least 95-5%. Crowds at the Games pictured seem larger than today's gatherings. That's just my opinion. No visible body ink on the athletes, either. Times change. Can't hear the pipers, but I wager the tempos of the tunes were faster and the pitch of the chanters lower. All that being said, I could see myself not feeling out of place were I at one of the events in the pictures. It's nice to feel part of that continuity and tradition.
