I get a bad experience less than 10% of the time, usually with an inexperienced security person who has not seen a kilt before. Larger airports are more used to kilts. On three occasions I have been probed within an inch of my life, including having a security scanner shoved close to where the sun don't shine. Mostly it is fine. Given the weight limit on baggage, I will usually wear my Argyll jacket and an 8 yard kilt which are 2.8 Kg, a bit dent in a 20 Kg limit.

I flew out of Bangor, Me late May for ah High School graduation. I flew kilted for the 1st time. I set off the alert with "density" where I usually have my sporran (Hmmm...). Te guard stated tat if I wanted I coluld have a search done in private the quickly began the public frisk... once is enough. i wen thru security for the return flight and as I stepped out I announced that I would opt for the private area. When in the secured room with the agent and chaperone I said that i would be happy to lift my kilt for a quick visual without the hands on & we all agreeded that would work. From now own I will announce that a private search is preferred & flash those Brave, Proud & Willing Public servants as needed.

I fail to see why this should be necessary and why a kilt should be treated any different from a skirt or dress. I've never seen women in skirts being ushered into the private security area (possibly because so many travel in trousers these days) and that is before we even thinking about that treatment for someone in a full length burka.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
