The Stillwater Heavyweight Wool kilt is going to feel, look, and weigh more like a traditional kilt, but neither it nor the USA Kilts P/V casual kilt are constructed in the traditional manner. The Stillwater kilt has more material and deeper pleats more in line with the traditional kilt. Again, there is a BIG difference between the weight and feel of Poly Viscose vs. 16oz wool (or thereabouts), as well as the way the kilt hangs and swishes. Especially when comparing a 5 yard kilt with an 8 yard one. All things to consider.

Given these two options, I think that for your purposes, I would personally go with the Stillwater Heavyweight Wool kilt. The price is roughly in the same ballpark, and the Stillwater is closer to a traditional design that is more appropriate for a wedding function in the minds of most.

Just as a point of order, one can custom order the USAKilts casual to size.

so without starting another thread unless you think i should i have some more newbie questions. first is what color hose ? i will be wearing a white shirt and a black bow tie unless i can find a sutherland bow tie and a black sport coat. i am not so traditional and am covered in tattoos and a big beard so i will not be wearing dress shoes. my footwear of choice will most likely be short doc martin boots. is there a rule of thumb or i guess hose for color matching or what to do or not to do? also my other question is about the sporran. it there a cretain style or color i should not get "again with the rules" or do i just get one that i like the looks of? thanks in advance

To answer your question on hose colour I would use one of the colours from the kilt or perhaps claret, (maroon). Take a look at the 1 kilt 10 looks thread for ideas on what to wear

As for a sport coat I would not wear one at all as they are not cut for the kilt and to me look sloppy, better to leave it off altogether. If however you do want a jacket then by all means go out and get one but get an Argyll jacket, A bunch of mine have come from eBay and can be fairly inexpensive.

so i got my kilt in the mail today from kilts 4 less. the quality seems good. the tartan in sutherland is nice. unfortunately despite measuring myself exactly as the site described it is way to big. i ordered a 36 even though with a tap i had to pull it pretty tight to get that measurement.
i was closer to 37 or so but didnt want it to be too loose because i am built like a straight line so if things are not snug they tent to slide down pretty fast. this kilt on the tightest adjustment is just too loose. i am a ultra runner at the beginning of my season so by september when i have the wedding i will most likely be another 5 pounds lighter. now i have to go through all the hassle of sending it back and hoping they have another one in my size. or can i have the buckles moved 2 or 3 inches? would that work?

I have recently lost 10 pounds and have moved the buckles and straps on most of my kilts, it can be done. I'm sure if you search the forum there will be some discussion on this. Sorry it was not your size, if you don't feel you should move the straps yourself and as you have some time before the wedding maybe get in touch with them and see if they can send out one in the correct size.

How much did you move the straps? I would need about 4 inches I would guess. Would this change the way to kilt looks? I am pretty handy with a sewing machine

I ended up moving them several inches on both sides, it didn't really change the way the they look much at all.

Best start by asking Kilts 4 Less what they can offer, if anything. If the answer is no, then moving the buckles and strap should be fine. I've taken a 36 down to a 32 that way and the kilt still works well.

kilts 4 less so far has great customer service. i do have to pay shipping to send it back but free to re send another. they offered to move the straps for me or refund my shipping cost to have it done here but after trying it on several times i think it is just too big so i will send it back for a 32. i checked with a tape and i have at least 4 inches too many. the only crappy part is that it will take 4 to 6 weeks because they do not have the Sutherland in stock in a 32. oh well gives me time to obsess a bit more and shop for hose and a sporran. thanks everyone for all your help
