When I met Hamish Clark (Duncan) a year ago at the opening of Howie's 'TFCK' showroom in Edinburgh, the matter of his kilts in the show came up in our conversation......... naturally! He didn't say anything about there having been different kilts in different series, but he did tell me that he was given a really expensive, top of the range kilt to wear in his less energetic/'wading in the loch' scenes. In the scenes where he was likely to damage that kilt, he had to change into 'mock-up' kilts, sewn in the wardrobe department at the BBC - and there were a number of those!
All the kilts he wore had small, lead weights sewn into the selvedges to help keep the pleats from flying too high as he dashed about!!
I must admit that I always assumed Duncan's kilts to be heavier than those worn much less frequently by other charcters in the programme. In the main theirs were kilts for special occasions (16oz?) whereas Duncan's were working garments (more likely good, solid 18oz), but maybe that was because of the weights!!
