    thanks for the link, interseting reading, but I still don't understand why it should be returned to Scotland, as I said before it might be nice to have in Scotland, but it hardly being returned!

    It was in Wallaces possesion when he was captured, The letter was of some significance to Wallace, so why not have it on display rather than in some archive?

    "return" to give back, Wallace was captured in Scotland, and carted off to England along with the letter, the letter was in Wallaces possession hence that was "captured" as well -please can we have our letter back please!

    If the letter was from the King of France..... why should it go back to Scotland? What am I missing??

    The letter, is known as The Safe Conduct, it was being carried by Wallace when he was seized in August 1305 in Robroyston near Glasgow. The letter was written by the King of France, it was meant to grant Wallace safe conduct to visit the Pope. The letter has been archived in London since Wallace was tried and executed

    Basically means;

    Philip by the grace of God, King of the French, to my beloved and trusting agents appointed to the court of Rome, greetings and Love. We command you to request the Supreme Pontiff to hold our beloved William Wallace of Scotland, Knight recommended to his favour in those matters of business that he has to dispatch with him

    Nope, and I don't wear a kilt either.

    I wear a breacan feile, which is supposed to have been around then. Due to a lack of drawings/archaelogical evidence no-one is sure about the dressing trends of Wallace's time. The breacan feile was the clothing of Ancient Celts (and latterly picts) in Alba, and outlawed after the failed uprising. The kilt has evolved now into what it is, and some would say (ie me) it has evolved even further by going plain (no tartans) and gaining pockets .

    We understand your position concerning the return of the Safe Conduct Letter.

    And that is why this topic was appropriately placed in the Off Topic section. Every now and again, things work as they are meant to work.

    just to clarify... I have no issue with it being displayed/kept etc in scotland.
    I didn't know about it , hence was seeking information about the document.
    And my questions were genuine as to why it should go to Scotland.
