Welcome to the genalogy addiction, it goes very well with the kilt addiction.

Most of the people who emigrated to the Philadelphia/Lancaster PA are were Scots Irish from Northen Ireland who went to Ireland from Scotland during the Highland Clearances of the early 1700's. They migrated down the "Great Wagon Trail" from Pennslyvania to the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

As Rex notes www.rootsweb.com is also a gold mine of information. There is a lot of misinformation and just plain blantant errors out there on the web, look for the well documented sources of information and also at the personal page for each of your ancestors.

Anyone have links to a good site for Texas genealogy? My family has been here on both sides since the 1880s.

Try www.rootsweb.com for starters, this is a huge free genealogical data base, they have many message boards, they are subdivided by surnames. Locate the message board for your surname, you may find some fellow Texans with your surname on the board. Most of the members will freely share information with you. In many cases they can direct you to previous research or resourses for your surname.

Another thing you can try is to do a google search for the surname or even put your ancestor's name in quotation marks, sometimes it is surprising what you will turn up. There are also some famly associations that have websites, you might see if you find a site for your surname.

Be forewarned, genealogy is very addictive, much like kilts.

I'm lucky, though. I have a couple of books that my Dad acquired before he died, documenting the "Hebert" side of the family. All that has been entrenched in French-speaking Canada since, like forever......

My old roommate was an Hebert....and a stunner Her family was originally from Winnipeg (fair size French community).

I use onegreatfamily.com for my research. Mostly because it will search many different sites for you and you can also see what others have done and integrate good information with your own. I've gotten back to my 16th Great Grandmother (Christian Webb) 1493 Kingswood, Wiltshire,, England and My 16th Great Grandfather (John Browning) first record of him was 1519 in Gloucestersire England.
