MacGregor Tartans: Colour differences?
I wear a tank in the MacGregor Hunting, aka MacGregor of Cardney, and it incorporates the "maroon" with a very dark green striping in addition to the off-white and wee black. But I have seen, I think, images of the MacGregor Hunting with a much lighter/brighter green in it along with the maroon and other colours.
So I was wondering, can the thread colours vary that much within a named tartan, ie Hunting MacGregor, without becoming an offshoot tartan, eg weathered or ancient? Or maybe there is in fact a difference between Hunting MacGregor and MacGregor of Cardney? Because now that I think about it, the instance of the "Hunting" tartan was actually in the formal outfit of a member of the MacGregors of Cardney...
I would be much obliged for info from persons with intimate knowledge of this subject matter...

From what I can make out, it seems that tartans are pretty much whatever the mills say they are.

A couple of related links
First, here is a posting I did on the MacGregor tartans specifically...

Second, here is an article on the color variations in tartans, which mentions the color variations one is likely to find in the same tartan woven by different mills...
