Macleod of Lewis (of course!) for my family (Nichol, on my father's side is a sept of Macleod, although apprently also claimed by a few other clans, and they have their own tartan-which my son has a kilt of).
Lindsay (because AlanH was kind enough to make me a mini in this-very attractive).
X-Marks (of course-the online family)
Be well,

I've got tartans that are just pretty, and I've got tartans that mean something to me.
I've got five yards of the Texas Bluebonnet in thirteen ounce, trying to decide on a USAK knife pleat or another Newsome box pleat, and another ten yards of it in PV. My people have been in Texas for five and six generations on either side. Even if they'd just moved here the day before I was born, it wouldn't matter. Being a Texan doesn't define me, but it informs me.
Irish National. Hey, part Jock by ancestry, part Mick.
Leatherneck/USMC. Them's my clan colors, brother. Four years of faithful if undemanding service in the USMC and the oath to the Constitution, and field days and the beergarden and snapping to for Colors and feeling the solid weight of history and tradition like never before. I'm no Johnny Ooh-rah, but if I have a clan, it's the Corps: our victories are sweeter, our defeats more bitter, our lapses more personally disturbing.
Long term I'm going to get the artifact tartan from Kazakhstan woven up (check out District-tartans.com under "Europe") My lady Natasha was born in Kazakhstan, although she's ethnically Russian, and she's as "Kazakhstani-informed" as I am "Texican-informed." Dang sharp tartan, too. It'll make up into a fine box pleated kilt, and probably a spare knife pleated as well.

Tartans I have
Wallace My mother; the clan we've always considered "ours," although I have not done any genealogy with this line.
MacGregor Her grandmother (a Carolina Gregg)
MacLeod Hunting/Harris (a) because it's beautiful (b) I grew up surrounded by McLeods and their kin (c) I'm pretty sure there are some of those kin in the Gregg line, between 1759 and last week (d) also I have a real fondness for the band called... Hunting McLeod
Tartans I want
First, I admitted that I was powerless over tartans, but I can't have them all. Yet.
Variations on Wallace and MacGregor. The Wallace hunting in a tank? A nice MacGregor in a box-pleat may be my first upgrade (only have a SK so far). MacGregor hunting/Cawdor can be very pretty.
Xmarks You are here.
Carolina Born here, came back here, love both Carolinas. Beautiful tartan.
Nova Scotia Tenuous family links through cousins, and it's gorgeous. Can I rationalize a Maple Leaf?! it is likewise drop-dead gorgeous.
Ulster or Antrim Whence the Greggs emigrated.
Irish National For my wife's family, or any district association I can establish.
A Welsh association for my godfather, born in Barry, S. Wales. St. David or a district tartan?
Now something purple to go with all my college shirts, ball-caps, etc. Our colors are purple and white (Northwestern). I wish the beautiful Furman University tartan I saw last week were ours.
a. Plain black (on order), SWK Nightstalker, or Black Shadow to go with anything.
b. Warrior tartan in a USAK is probably my next purchase.
c. Isle of Skye no justification required
d. Design a custom tartan??? Incorporate elements from Illinois, Methodist Church (a pretty one), maybe Evans and a couple of other strategic names; but use lots of purple & white. I have no idea that I could sell this to the trustees, but it could be my own fashion tartan. And I could probably rope in the marching-band alumni.
What have I forgotten? Citadel (Military College of South Carolina) in honor of my grandfather, class of 1917; US Navy in honor of my uncle (from a Reserve j.g. to a lifer). If I can establish the links, MacDonald for my grandmother's cousins; MacLennon for other connections.
I may be a tartan addict. It is certain that I am kilt-habituated.

Currently have:
Livingston Modern - well, I am a Livingston
Black Watch - Universal and I just felt I needed one at some point.
On the list:
Walker Hunting - Mom's side of the family
Livingston Ancient - I'm still a Livingston
XMarks - Part of this on line clan
US Army - In the Reserves for 6 years, the US Army is one of my accounts, more than 1 GF/GGGGF and numbers in between were in the US Army back to the Revolutionary War.
Iowa Tartan - Soooo many of my family both past and present were born or raised there AND my wife is from Iowa.
Colorado Tartan - where I live now
US Tartan - naturally
There are a couple more out there that I just can't think of right now.

You won't regret it, mate. My Iowa tartan kilt (by Matt) is pure dead brilliant! It was quite the thrill to wear it on the site of the ancestral farmstead last month.

Todd

McLeod Hunting - My first kilt, and the best looking kilt from Stillwater, in my opinion.
I don't know my Scottish ancestry (if I have any), so I just went with the tartan I liked best.

*Holyrood....'cause I like it.
*MacNaughton, muted...because of my ancestors John McKnight and Martha McKnight
*X-Marks....*doh*!
*Scottish National....'cause I like it!
*California State Tartan, because I live here!
*MacNicol, red variant. I bought it off of ebay to make my first "practice" kilt out of, and it came out so well that I'm still wearing it.
Ramsay, blue...loved the blue color
sitting in my study waiting to get made...7 yards of gray Stewart
and I will likely break down and buy some Hall clan tartan yardage for a box-pleat kilt, someday.
I sold my Black Watch Stillwater, so no really common tartan kilts left.
