    Surnames of Scotland

Does anyone own a copy of Surnames of Scotland by George F. Black? I am looking for a certain entry (if one exists), but none of my local libraries has a copy. Thanks.

    Interlibrary loan

You can probably get a copy of it through the interlibrary loan system, if you are in the US. You just fill out a request form at you local library with the title, author, copyright date, ppublisher and ISBN, all of which you can probably discover at www.amazon.com. A search will be done and a library with the book will send it to your library. Here, the cost is usually only $3, and though it is said that some libraries may charge extra fees, I have never seen that. It usually takes four to six weeks for the book to arrive. However, some libraries are reluctant to send out genealogy and out of print books.

I got curious and did some looking around. The book certainly is seen as the authoritative reference so it's the one to look at.

Some books are already on pdf but it doesn't look like this one is. What I did discover is that you could probably recreate the book from websites. Quite a few people have copied the book's pages into their own geneology.

Try googling this: "surnames of scotland" black pdf name. Keep the apostrophes because that tells google that you want that phrase only, substitute the name you're looking for name in the search.

Hopefully, you'll find that someone has put the page out there just for you. If that doesn't work, try again after removing pdf, but I think that will give too many answers to sort through.

    Good luck.

    Thumbs up

I just ordered my copy the other night from here:
    Scots Press

Believe me I know, $50 is a good price for this book.

Black was American so the book should be available there. It is certainly in our local library in Edinburgh so if you have a particular enquiry PM me and I will look it up for you. No point in buying it unless you are into genealogy in a big way, it isn't a great read but has lots of valuable info about different names.

BTW, the missus is a librarian and told me to tell you that a reference desk could simply look up the name for you. Save you tons of hassle.

They have systems in place for reference books on Inter-Library Loans so you could try that. You just couldn't take it home. They might even photocopy it for you.

As a former genealogy librarian, I would agree with this suggestion. Contact your local public library's genealogical department, or the local genealogical society. They may have a copy, or they may be able to ILL the entry you need via ARIEL or another interlibrary loan service.

    Regards,

    Todd
