Jacket Help

Okay, so here's my dilemna. I've been invited to a wedding for next Saturday. What perfect timing as my kilt and everything else will have arrived by then. But, I want to be semi-formal with a jacket. Not a PC, but something nice, and purchasing a new argyll [sp?] is out. Now, I've read that a regular suit jacket is a no-no. But, what is a cheap option besides rental? I'm going to hit the vintage shops and Salvation Army this weekend, but I'm looking for any other potential leads you might be able to give.

You might want to check out your local tartan shops (provided you have any in the area) for used jackets on sale on consignment. I have been able to pick up an Argyll for $40.00 in my size that way. You could also see if they are selling off their ex-rentals, as this is another way of getting a jacket at a great price.

And yes you do have Argyll spelled correctly.

I remember seeing it and thinking it looked possible. It has a step by step conversion of a thrift store twee to a kilt jacket. If you have or can get a jacket, maybe you could have a tailor convert it for you if you can't do it yourself.

If you call around to your local formalwear rental places, ask if they have "waist jackets". I got one of these...they just sold it to me as ex-hire...and it's not bad. You may want to ask if they have a three button vest that'll go with it.

The one I found is from the "Robert Wagner Collection" and I expect that it was left over from the late seventies-early eighties.

I actually ordered a synthetic Eton jacket at www.Uniformalwearhouse.com

It came quickly, and looks great. I am changing the cloth covered button that it came with to silver buttons with celtic designed on them. Otherwise, it will definitely work in a pinch.

Curious that there are jackets called "waist jackets," since the British word "waistcoat" (pronounced WEScut) is the same as the American word "vest" (and the British word "vest" is the same as the American word "undershirt").

Not quite a military mess jacket...here's a really bad photo that I took right after I got the jacket home:

I guarantee that it looked better after a cleaning and pressing and with a wing collar shirt and bowtie.

One of the things that I've noticed about the mess jackets is that they often have braid attached that the user feels may be inappropriate and it's difficult to remove without the jacket looking bad as a result.

That looks very close to my tuxedo, that I just do not wear, I wore it once for my younger brother's wedding, he sells menswear and insisted that we all buy our tuxedos from him.
