Buzz Kidder makes a heavy casual belt that works great:

It also shows the sporran hangers here, but I rarely use them. This is probably the belt I wear most often when dressing casually.

I'm pretty sure you can get them through the Scottish Tartans Museum and probably other places as well.

What he said! (What is a numpty, anyway?)

The belt from Kidder is a dandy, alright. But so is CavScout's, which is the best on the market.

The kilt to me just looks sort of...naked...without a belt. I'm the same about blue jeans or any kind of pant. If you are tucking in your shirt, wear a belt.

Back on the issue of belt with a waist coat, if you look at this painting by MacLeay, the Gent on the right happens to show the white waist coat worn under the belt. Very interesting.

Over the jacket or doublet is not quite so odd. We still see that today with some of the more formal Scottish dress (Montrose doublet) and the pipers will wear them that way.http://kiltstore.net/sr_gaeli_montro...ar:id=vJUWHn2y

My visualization of the belt "over" a waist coat was not that flattering originally but this doesn't look too bad actually...just different
