In looking over all the comments concerning the possible item that could be made from the remaining fabric (About 2 1/2 yards, 58" wide) left from making the Cunningham kilts, I note--trews, fly plaids, flashes, sash, doublet, waist coat with scoop neck and with standard 6 button, and scarf. Not being well grounded in the various parts of Scottish dress other than the kilt, where would I find definitions or discriptions of the above, and directions on how to make them, or patterns for the same. emyclaire

Hello, Emyclaire. Let me first say how lucky your grandson is to have you in his life.
There have been several posts on making flashes, at the least. Use the "Search" feature to find them, and they should be a great guide, where available.
All the best!

Fortunately, I have been sewing for many, many years, so the terms and instructions weren't so daunting. It was all the "hand sewing", as most of my sewing is done quickly on the machine. But my great auntie who had been a tailor's apprentess taught me how to hand sew many years ago, so no biggie.
For those who have been asking, the Cunningham clan in my background had lived in Mississippi, Canada, Minnesota, and California over the years.
Again, thanks for all the many compliments on my kilt making. I really appreciate it. Emyclaire
from Chicago. You've truly given your grandson an heirloom kilt. And he's a sneaky one for giving you Barb's book for Christmas. I'm willing to bet that a lot of Xmarker's are ready for you to adopt them.

Trews - simplistically pants cut on the bias The Tartan museum has a pattern - http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/patterns.htm
Fly Plaid - basically a square of cloth with a fringe - I may be wrong but I think it is normally 58 inches square. It can have a straight fringe, twisted fringe or a braided fringe.
Waist coat - five or six button vest with the front sides below the button curved away so it doesn't interfere with the sporran - belt not worn.
Doublet - fancy jacket - I don't think you have enough material.
When you got to the Tartan Museum site they should have picture of all these items.

He sent the book for Christmas after he had already exacted the promise from me to make the kilts for him and his brother. I said I would, but I needed the instructions.
Where are you in the Chicago area. My first husband (RIP) and I with our family lived in several of the southwestern suburban areas of Chicago, Midlothian, Oak Forest, and Frankfort years ago. Don't recognize the area today, it has grown so much.

parting with a newborn
So I took the new kilt into the alterations shop reccommended by Todd. I have to say it was difficult to hand the kilt to someone I dont know to have work done on it. I also took my MacMillan in so that they would have a point of reference and to get a loose leather strap stitched in again. I am nervously awaiting the phone call that they are finished!

Hey Grandson, when are you going to get your kilt back? You could have sent it back to its "Mama" and she would have changed tho buckles, and sent it back in the time it is taking to get the baby back from the tailor. I am anxious to see a picture of it on, with the basting out of the pleats. Grandma (emyclaire)

Well, to be perfectly fair they have only had it a little over a week. The tailors are busy due to prom season coming around no doubt. I would have loved to send it to you to fix but I THOUGHT this would be quicker. It is going to be a bit more cost effective in the way of postage back and forth. You think you are anxious to see a pic of it? I am dying to try it on. . . . Anyway I will keep you and the rest of Xmarks posted when I find out its done!
