Hello A A.I suppose I look at things through Scots eyes and whilst a tartan square is worn,by the military mainly,behind the cap badge,I think that tartan as headwear can be overdone.There is nothing more Scots than a Balmoral or Glengarry so why put tartan on it?Others may have different thoughts,of course.

I agree - sort of - When worn with kilt, tartan should be mainly on the kilt. But when some wear their bonnets with regular clothing, then a bit more tartan looks OK - in my eyes.

.....What colour was the bonnet...

It was a simple black one. The standard red & black dicing was gone & in it's place was my state's tartan (Tennessee). I also saw them in Royal Stewart & Buccahan. It was at a Highland game in Middle Tennessee last year. I am sorry but do not remember the vendor

Hi James,until very recently "tartan above the waist" was just not seen in the Scots kilt world and I venture to suggest that is still the common thought here.I, along with most of Scots,still raise an eyebrow at tartan ties,so goodness only knows what the reaction to tartan headwear!Worn with the kilt of course.

Tartan ties are more commonly seen when trousers(pants) and jacket are worn.The music hall is generally the place for tartan head wear.I think that the tartan theme can go too far sometimes and I feel that this overdoing of the tartan trend is very much a trans Atlantic thing.As I say, you don't need tartan on a Balmoral for people to know it's Scots.

I've seen several a Glengerry and Balmoral that had replaced the behind the clan badge ribbon with tartan - That would work.

I like wearing a small tartan flash behind my clan badge. That's just me, I like the military style -- & there are times I wear my bonnet when walking out other than in a kilt thus I like a bit of my clans tartan with me.

As for tartan bonnets, you see them from time to time at our local games.
Not for me, though I like seeing the wee ones wearing them. I plan to get one for my daughter's upcoming 9th birthday (she wants one)

Absolute Total agreement......

For my personal clothing, that's how I feel. I have been known, at rare times to wear a matching tartan tie when I am wearing a vest. I feel the vest adds the required seperation of colors. I would never but never wear one tartan kilt with another tartan tie....... But that's me...... some do.

You are dead right Phil-------I forgot tartan waistcoats.OOOPS! So let me correct myself PDQ. Apart from the occasional tartan waistcoat seen on "dress occasions" no tartan above the waist,is still a rule of thumb in Scotland.How's that?
