So the "Stewart" series of Tartans could be thought of as "Catholic"

Not any more or less than any other clan tartans. Yes, Bonnie Prince Charlie was a Catholic. A lot of other Stewarts were. A lot of his supporters were. And no doubt many of his supporters were co-religionists who supported him because of his religion. But a lot of Stewarts were Protestant, as well. King James VI comes to mind.
The present day cheif of Clan Lamont is a Catholic priest. Does this make the Lamont tartan a Catholic tartan? What about all those Protestant Lamonts? The present cheif of the Clan Drummond is also a Catholic. Doesn't mean the Drummond tartan is a "Catholic" tartan. If he were Anglican it wouldn't mean his tartan was an Anglican tartan.

The history of the various tartans is always interesting, with new information coming to light.
Thanks for the education Matt.

About the city of Rome tartan, the explanation about the base colours kill my enthusiasms immediately:

Football? The sport with the rounded ball? Not for me pal!
Cheers
Is it the same colour of the rugby football national team or not?
obviously they choose the most fampus sport to indicate the colours of the national team in every sport "gli azzurri".
we that have been so luckuy to play better sport should have much more pity for the soccer...
However there are some "italian" tartan, the Rome, Scozia and PCE (Prince Charles Edwards), but I preferred to wear the Black Watch, when decided to wear a universal tartan, but it is only question of tastes.
Ciao!

Yes, but it's the starting point that's wrong.
Going OT, now in Rome, but I was born in La Spezia, same place (Liguria), opposite side! Farinata rulez!
