How about a little poll here ?

But, I agree with what you're saying.

Seal, crest, badge. Toe-mate-os, Toe-mawt-oes. ;)

These clan tartans, many at least, are now quite old. In regard to the Drummond example, they've now been wearing this tartan for 186 years. In my book, that's a pretty long time.

Hmmm...interesting idea. How do I go about that? Or do I let a mod do it?
I think the following would be good:
What Tartans Will you wear?
My clan tartan, and no other.
My clan tartan and universal tartans. No tartans of any other clan.
Tartans to which I have a connection (family, military, region, etc.)
Any tartan I wish to wear.

There's at least one other option, which is the one I follow:
Tartans to which I have a connection (family, military, region, etc.)

Added. I figured that may fall under the Clan and Universal option, however, I can see a difference in military.

Although, in a way, the military is like a clan. It's certainly the only "clan" to which I have sworn loyalty.
