Our own Panache started a thread about casual kilted attire, here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/x...x.html?t=22431.
I've garnered a few tips from it, myself!

You have such a huge choice of footwear in the USA.
When I make it over the Pond I will have to bring something neet back to France.

I found some lightweight combat boots at an Army and Navy store that are great during the summer..and they were cheap!

I regularly wear Doc Martens, T.U.K. creepers, or Adidas with a kilt. I always wear hose with the boots and regular socks with the Adidas, and I've gone both ways with the creepers.

I often wear casual, everyday shoes with kilt stockings and flashes when I'm kilted (I wear tanks). I've been kilted for a number of years and always buy shoes sized to fit over kilt stockings, that way I can use the same shoes kilted or otherwise. Laced or loafers, black or brown, I think they look just fine. Truth be known, I don't even own brogues. I think they are too expensive for the limited use I would put them to. My philosophy is that my kilts are part of my wardrobe so I buy things that I can use whether kilted or not, that includes casual shoes, dress shoes, sandals, and hiking boots.

I wear brown hiking boots with my other brown leathers (sporran and belts) and I also have a pair of black Harley-Davidson riding boots for the other black leathers.

A common misconception with kilts is that you have to wear this or have to wear that in this way. Well, the kilt is about comfort and freedom - so you are free to wear what is comfortable for you!
My personal taste is to wear boots, whether they be hiking, combat, motorcycle, or otherwise. I think this is because of the fact that they go up the ankle a bit, which works well with socks. If not wearing socks, I think sandals will work just fine, especially athletic sandals.

I wear hiking shoes with my AKs and I don't tuck the t-shirt in either when I'm just kicking around.

Leather Asolo hiking boots are my main choice for casual wear. Like one of the earlier posters alluded to, to me a tennis shoe just does not balance out the sturdiness of the kilt. But, just my 2 cents worth.
