That is a beautiful dress, Cynthia. It looks like a lot of intricate work went into making it. If this is proof of your efforts with limited experience, as you say, then you must be very talented with the needle.

You found De Waal's Universal Sherlock Holmes catalogue!! Ronald DeWaal tried to catalogue all of the works about Sherlock Holmes. It's huge!! The article you cited above is a piece from The Holmesian Observer . It was a publication from the '70's.

Someone once said that Holmes had the most books, articles and monographs ever written for a man who never lived. The Sherlockian world is full of small publications with essays penned by Sherlockians. I have read countless ones about Watson's Bull Pup!! The most popular publication is the Baker Street Journal.

If you read The Musgrave Ritual, it clearly states that Holmes shot a V.R into his wall. Now with what type of gun there is a debate.

I could go on further about Holmes and his parents and how Holmes was Sherringford Holmes in early drafts of STUD or Angels of Darkness..but I am at work and it really has nothing to do with kilts. If anyone is interested please PM me.

The costume department for the Granada series did take many liberties with the wardrobe for the time period. There is a book about it that I believe is called the “Baker St Dossier” but I will have to check. I know there is a few interviews with producers on the web in various places.

I don't know, a dress like that almost cries out for a waltz.

    Hospitaller,
Your images have opened up a whole new world of kilting for me. THANK YOU!
    Re Holmes and Victorian influences.
As Albert died rather early, I wonder as to his influence in the kilted uniform versus those of Mr. Brown, a far more traditional Scot. Even those who claim a knowledge of this witout looking it up must recognize the difference between the very military style and that of the gentleman at the turn of the century as reflected in the Edwardian era a la the kilt and high collars,etc.. Even the fictional Holmes came during the transition of the two eras of marketedly unique fashion styles. Of course some even claim that Holmes was the father of Nero Wolfe. Now THAT's a stretch.
