However, I understand that they were banned in Ireland by the Statute of Kilkenny.

I must take issue with the myth that Scots are cheap. The correct word is Thrifty, which means getting the most out of your money. Money spent on true quality is being thrifty. Cheap means it must cost less (and is also likely to be of inferior quality).

Otherwise, I think the above posts have pretty well covered the topic, but I'll add one more. . . . All Scots are big, tall, and red-headed!

    Lets see,

All Scots are highlanders. As a descendent of a border family this grates on me.

All Scots look like those slabs of beefcake on romance novel covers.

It is highly likely that almost all people of European descent descend from Charlemagne. The further back you go, the fewer people there were, yet the more ancestors we have, since that number doubles every generation.

So, all of us have many illustrious ancestors, though most of us---other than those addicted to genealogy--- are unaware of who they are. This is even more true in geographic locales with a more closed gene pool, such as the Birtish Isles.

When some one claims descent from some one with lots of progeny, say King John of England, the polite thing to do is to respond, "That's nice, dear," and not point out that the person is one of millions who can make the same claim.

You have to take into account, also. Once you get back to a certain time period, the only ones who knew how to write or have thier history written or recorded is the ones connected to the high muckty-mucks..the local peasants were not recorded.
