It a footnote in History... The Irish/Scots/et al who fought for freedom were sent to the reaches of the British Empire for the profit of British Subjects. We survived and some cases prospered in our own ways. The world is full of the descendents of these Rebels. I am proud to be descended from one of these men, James Claghorn a survivor of the Battle of Dunbar, and the march that followed.
Its good these chapters in History are there to remind us of the past. We cannot change it, but because of it, we have in some ways grown better for it.

The Scots were the first in Europe to erect a monument to the martyred Lincoln, the "Great Emancipator" of the slaves:

Indeed -- the story of our ancestors may serve as inspiration to those of us in the present. As Edmund Burke said:

People will not look forward to posterity, who never look backward to their ancestors.

I have been to Edinburgh a few times and had no idea there was a statue of Abraham Lincoln there. I will be sure to visit it this summer when I am there. Learn something new everyday, thanks for sharing.

As an aside to this topic, it could certainly be argued that indentured servitude was a form of slavery. Many Ulster-Scots sold themselves into servitude and either died before their contract ended, or had to keep extending their contracts. Noted historian Dr. Richard Hofstadter has a very interesting essay on White Servitude here:

A few years ago, an Irish author wrote a novel, in which she depicted the case of a young Irish woman who was rounded up and shipped off to Barbados in this way. At that time, she was excoriated in the Irish press for writing about the topic.
