Reinvention
Like many of my fellow Rabble I've been in more than one field.
Studied Industrial Design in college and spent the next 15 years designing plumbing fixtures and fittings for Eljer.
A brief detour into the Navy during Viet Nam followed by stints of Reserve and Active service for the next 31 years. Retired in 2001.
Chartered the Quality Assurance function at Eljer and Household Manufacturing up to VP level.
QA and QA Data systems with Nordson Corp for 14 years and SAP Configurator.
Side wheel River Boat Captain at Stone Mountain Park.
After those two corporations eliminated my positions while moving manufacturing overseas I'd had enough of civilian corporate life so I followed my passion for disaster management and joined the DHS Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as an Emergency Management Program Specialist. I am currently leading Public Assistance repairing infrastructure and cleaning up 15 million cubic yards of debris from the January Ice Storm in Kentucky. Who knew career number 9 could be this much fun and so personally fulfilling.
To my fellow Forumites between positions, don't despair because something even better is out there even starting over in your sixties. Keep learning and keep looking forward.
All the best,
Bruce :ootd:

I can't recall how long ago I posted on this thread, but these days I'm a "junk man" of sorts. I haul away clutter and junk from people's homes and yards, plus I do deliveries and other odd jobs. I've wanted to have my own company for ages and I finally came up with something that no one else in the region offers. It's been a slow start but business is starting to take off.

So you're the one who speaks only German and translates Japanese into English for those things. I knew you were are real person out there somewhere.

I teach technical theatre and design courses at a small college in Oklahoma. This is my 12th year here with 8 more before that. I sometimes write plays but I haven't made anything from that.

I too, as with many of the rabble, have found myself variously employed. However, currently I find myself freshly degreed (Aug. 08) with a BA in Music, and working full time in a molecular biology lab that specializes in mycological phylogenetics. (geek speak for we look at dna in a certain species of mushrooms to determine family relationships and evolutional development.) So, I beat up mushrooms and take their dna all day. I can't go kilted (safety regs) but I get to go to the mountains on a semi regular basis and hike around and get paid to do it.
Oh, and I teach private lessons to kids that want to learn the high brasses, ie. trumpet and french horn, and play the occasional wedding and gig.

Here's our lab website: http://www.bio.utk.edu/matheny/Site/Home.html
Here I am at a wedding last January.

I work as an ElectroMechanical Assembly Tech for a division of Knorr-Bremse. I assemble doors and door operators for Light rail and rapid transit cars. I get to stand next to a workbench all day and do the same operation over and over, day in and day out. But the health plan is the best I have ever seen and we get free doughnuts on the first friday of the month. IFE Austria is the subsidary. In the US it is IFE North America. Pronounced EEEFA, not Iffy. If you use rapid transit or Rail services in the Us and Canada, you are riding on our parts.
