    Raiding the Regiment

Has anybody ever tried obtaining a kilt directly from a service regiment?

I just sent of an email to the Nova Scotia Highlanders asking for one. I doubt they'll give any up even for cash, but I might at least get some information about whose cloth they use, how they pleat it and maybe where they're made. It would be nice to be able to get the Clan Donald tartan in a regimental weight.

I'm thinking the kilts might all be accounted for. In that "stores is for storin' " kind of way. I would imagine they'd be able to help you with your questions though.

When I was in the Army we'd occasionally meet up with lads from other services who were quite willing to trade, or sell off parts of their kit for cash. Russian sailors would gladly part with every stitch on their backs...!

I once played my pipes in the Royal Scots Sgts Mess, and they gave me a kilt length in Hunting Stewart their regimental tartan.

So you never know, they may make some sort of deal with you just because of your cheek.

    Good luck.

Man, I hope that works out for you.

Have you found anything at the army surplus stores? I remember 11-12 years ago when Clan Albanach in Scotland had some surplus kilts for sale.

Unfortunately man @ Q & M is not a shop and supplying goods like this, even if paid for would bee seen as a contravention of regs and could end up with the personnel involved getting the boot.

That being said if you ask you may get some guidance. Good PR always gets a tick in the box

Some time ago, in the 1980s, the Canadian Forces officially stopped selling used uniforms on the surplus market. There was some talk that perhaps that was because they could be reused for nefarious purposes, but at the time there was a very unfriendly-to-the-military party in power and one had to suspect that said uniforms were being kept in service long after they would have been in better times. But even now, if our forces are willing to sell valuable kilts, surplus or otherwise, I will be very surprised. And wanting to know!

There is some minor kit to be had, namely brogues, but kilts? Nay.

A modest fire in the QM's store was always said to be a good way of explaining away the odd discrepancy..........!
