cost?
I wanted to see if the rabble could give me an idea of what the going rate for a 5yr old ex-hire kilt would be(or rather what people would be willing to pay)?
8yd 13oz

I'm sure condition would be far more important than the age in determining value? And pics are always handy
But I'd say poke through the For Sale section of the forum and see if you can find anything comparable.

I recently picked up an ex-hire from Ebay.UK for around $100. It was listed as an 8yd but i think it is less than that. Good condition, a couple spots that the dry-cleaner took care of.

I just picked up a vintage wool kilt myself from eBay, ran me about $85 (~ 50-some GBP). Looks like it's in great shape, now I'm just waiting on it to arrive. But definitely, condition far outweighs age.

The Clan Collection has a number of ex-hire kilts on their website with pricing. Might be a good reference.

I think that your question is almost unanswerable. My ex-hire, hand-stitched in Scotland, 16oz, 8 yard, Flower of Scotland tank cost £34 (including delivery) from eBay. The straps had hardly been used and I could discern no 'wear' an the kilt at all. By the same token, I have seen the same standard of kilt on eBay, with a starting price of £150.
For a kilt in that condition £150 is a good price and I would have paid it, but of course, £34 is better.
I think that it often comes down to what the market will bear.

Chas

The starting bid for 'ex hire' kilts off ebay is usually about £75. I was lucky enough to get one for that price in my (rare) clan tartan recently. It had seen a fair bit of wear and was probably over ten years old, but after a dry clean it came up like new (apart from the straps and waist lining, but I'll get these replaced at some time in the future). To buy a new kilt in this tartan (Hume ancient) would cost well over £300 today.
The Kilt is my delight !
