    Day plaids images

There was an interesting thread on Day Plaids, now closed.

Here are some images showing these being worn in the mid 19th century up through today...

Note that there was not a clear line, in the 1860's, between the sort of thing we call a "piper's plaid" today and a simple bit of tartan thrown over the shoulder. In The Highlanders Of Scotland long plaids are wrapped around the body, sometimes loosely, sometimes tightly, sometimes with a brooch, sometimes without.

Wonderful images Richard, thanks for sharing. I realize that we have discussed this topic in length already, however, I do wear a day plaid at functions such as Highland games - strictly for day wear. I have a matching plaid to all of my kilts in the 16 ounce strome, by Lochcarron - all have a purled fringe - straight fringe, such as in fly plaids, do not look good for a day plaid, one must have the longer, purled fringe. Essentially, my plaids are just like a piper's plaid, without the pleats. I fold mine in half, then double it over, then it is ready to be thrown over my left shoulder with the fringe hanging in the front. The look quite smart with my cromach.

Thanks for those great vintage shots, Richard. I also have one day-wear plaid in the MacIntyre Hunting Modern and have enjoyed wearing it on occasion.

Here are some more worthy gents with day plaids:

"Before two notes of the theme were played, Colin knew it was Patrick Mor MacCrimmon's 'Lament for the Children'...Sad seven times--ah, Patrick MacCrimmon of the seven dead sons....'It's a hard tune, that', said old Angus. Hard on the piper; hard on them all; hard on the world." Butcher's Broom, by Neil Gunn, 1994 Walker & Co, NY, p. 397-8.

It's interesting to see that ankle boots were often worn with the Kilt back in the day. Presumably that's because they were the style of the time and those were the boots they had.

In The Highlanders Of Scotland the 56 kilted figures are wearing the following footwear:

    25 Mary Jane style
11 Ghillie style (only one pair black, it with buckles)
10 ordinary shoes (what I would call an "Oxford")
    5 buckle loafers
    3 ankle boots
    1 spats
1 unique shoe halfway between a Mary Jane and a Ghillie

One cool thing about the Inverurie photo above is that it was taken at the same time that The Highlanders Of Scotland portraits were painted and it shows exactly the same sorts of things being worn, difficult to explain away by the people today who claim that the dress shown in The Highlanders Of Scotland was fictional.

Mmmmm... three out of fifty six you say.

It's interesting to see that ankle boots were... sometimes worn with the Kilt back in the day.

I'm wondering, would this one really be considered a day plaid?
To my eyes it just doesn't seem to have the heft/bulk traditionally associated with a day plaid...

Though worn in the manner of the gentleman in the first photo above,
the plaids across Drummond's & MacKenzie's chests seems to have a wee more "bulk" to them:
