I hate to say it, especially here, but I'd give up on the kilt at prom.
I wouldn't give up on it yet, HOWEVER, if your girlfriend doesn't warm to the idea then I'd rethink it. After all it is *her* school's prom that your attending, and if she isn't thrilled with the choice then nothing will kill the joy of the evening (or your relationship) quicker than in effect saying "your thoughts mean nothing to me on this, your special night."
Work on convincing her first (but don't be pushy about it either). And if she still doesn't warm to the idea, then go with "plan B" (trousers)....and figure on wearing the kilt at a later time.
