On your list I would go with a useful jacket first.
You already have two sporrans, so you are good there for now I think.
Plus you have one kilt in hand and one on order if I am tracking correctly.
Besides the day wear jacket, what about maybe adding some more hose colors to your closet? I had easy a dozen sweaters when I started down this path. With three pair of hose, lovat blue, lovat green and claret hose I have 36 possible choices of hose/sweater color. Certainly some of those work better than others.
It seems like folks in the UK get by with wearing either blue or red garter ties with any color hose they can think of. Or blue or red flashes. If you have two pairs of thing to wrap around your hose, one red, one blue, all that is left to do is maintain.
So with two kilts, a day wear jacket (presumably you have a collection of shirts and ties already) and three or four hose colors, then I would look at either a formal jacket and waistcoat to wear with black tie OR then go for brown sporran, strap and belt to multipy day wear options.
It isn't clear to me if your bobcat sporran will work with black tie.
Also, if your needs really lean to daywear, I agree brown leathers will give you options you may not have right now. However, hose color is less expensive and I think more eyecatching than leather color.
Anytime I have disagreed with MacMillan of Rathdowne it has been because my knowledge is not as exhaustive as his. I have learned quite a bit just trying to figure out why he has said some of the things he has said. He is a significant credit to the community.

Looking at Robertson hunting muted and modern red on Loch Carron you have lots and lots of hose options.

I believe, and could be very wrong, that MOR at one stage was considering ordering such an ensemble

Absolutely right, and it is on my short list!

So here's what I'm learning. Black or brown leather doesn't matter, choose one. (Sounds like both are acceptable for day wear.) Since I have black go with that and don't worry. Find a jacket that works (for me it has to be servicable for a cooler climate and not pricey like tweed (love the linen suggestion, Downunder). Resist matchy, matchy. Geez that is tough since it was drilled into me since I was a boy... but I'm doing it!
Cowher, if you're out there, what do you mean by a "ragweed" outfit. And Downunder my shoes shall be black! Just like yours!
I'm learning that daywear is more open to interpretation and the degree to which one understands practicality. Yes?

Yup, a double reply with more time between to think. Thank you AKscott for your help. That's exactly what I'm looking for. The bobcat is a pewter cantled sporran for formal. I really like it. What has really confused me on the forum is what I've read about brown leather for day wear...that it is preferable. I see that black leathers for day wear is fine. Thank you also for the posts about linen jackets. I am in the process of looking for a jacket that might be convertable. I am also going to look for a black leather sporran strap.
Please help me with the "ragweed" outfit. I'm not sure what that is.
Thank you all for your help. As a new guy on the block. I appreciate it.
Best. lr

That linen jacket looks lovely -- on the hangar. My experience with 100% linen is that the moment you put it on, it looks as if you slept in it. I'm talking a well-constructed jacket from a major design label, not just skirts or drawstring trousers that can be expected to wrinkle at a glance.
Some of the linen blends have better staying power, but for all the talk on this forum about keeping shoes shined and pleats straight -- linen just seems counter-intuitive!

Nobody notices the wrinkles when worn with this:

I am also appreciating the link "smart casual". Those posts have been really helpful, especially if there's no immediate budget for a jacket. Excellent suggestions! Do folks wear a leather sporran belt for day and evening wear?

If you do go the hog MOR, I'd love to see pictures of this jacket in action. Do please post some.
