This is the same method that I use also. It is cheaper than a new piece of luggage, and I've sucessfully carried two kilts in this manner before. Just remember to take your time and keep the pleats as straight and un-rumpled as possible. As Matt said allow your kilt to hang for a bit once you reach your destination to allow the pleats to relax and release any small wrinkles that might have developed.
