Ex-MoD Brass Cantle Question

Greetings,

I have a question in regards to attaching a sporran strap to the rear side of an ex-MoD brass cantle, how is this done? I can see that there are two "brackets" on the rear side of the cantle itself, actually apart of the cantle, but these seem appropriate for a sporran chain strap to clip into, what about a leather strap? Does the strap just feed through these two "brackets?" If so, does the sporran still sit comfortably and properly against the kilt apron? Am I missing something here?

Apologies if this seems like a rather stupid question, but I'm a newbie when it comes to thes style of brass cantles.
