Going formal with a tartan kilt isn't compulsary. I don't even posess anything formal to wear with my tartan kilt, as like you, I am not keen on the formal look. But then, as I wear my kilt when out hill walking, I would look pretty silly in full Highland regalia on the moors or in the mountains. I may be eccentric, but I am not that mad.
