On second thought, I'll add my contemporary taste to this thread for posterity as well even though you may have seen these photos in other threads.
I prefer the term "colour coordinated" to "matchy matchy" ;) I'm not obsessed about matching, but if you've got the threads anyway, you might as well look pulled together. There's a place for colour coordination AND contrast in this man's aesthetic.

Recent visit of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Lovat green day tweed with matching hose, red garter ties, tattersall shirt, club tie, contrasting burgundy wool waistcoat, antique pocket watch, Clanranald tank, simple black sporran and brogues.

Note: I'm not in love with either of these sporrans I currently own. I've got my eye out for a nice old brown leather with good patina and something more classic, perhaps in grey seal for the evening. I also want some hunting sporrans so the evolution will continue!
