If you don't mind I would like to add a comment from an entirely different perspective.

The first question I ask of a customer who comes into my shop with much the same problem, is -

"What is the level of formality of your event?"

I then can guide them better in picking their accessories.

If the other attendees are going to be in tuxedos then a Prince Charlie coatee and 3 button vest is paired with tuxedo shirt (With studs) and black bow tie.

If the others are going to be in suits and other Highland wear I will suggest an Argyle Jacket and waistcoat paired with a dress shirt and long tie.

If the event is more casual, but still suits, perhaps a Tweed jacket. (with or without vest) a nice shirt and tie.

For any event where the others will not have suits then I would suggest a nice sweater or perhaps just a nice shirt.

Don't overdress or over think your outfit. And don't fall into the trap of showing up to a Bar-B-Q looking like you just came from a wedding.

As far as colors go I do not (As in almost never) try to match a color from my kilt. I believe that the kilt is very capable of standing on its own. I use the example of a Scottish Weddding. All the guys will be wearing the same jacket, hose, sporran and ties but each will be in his own Tartan. And it looks great!

So I always suggest that the customer consider looking at hose that will color coordinate with the other parts of his outfit. Hose color similar to tie color and flashes color similar to pocket square color.

Please notice that I did not say Matching color. I do not match colors. I only try to stay within the same color palette. for example - browns go well with reds and yellows and blues go well with blacks and greys. But that is about as far as I try to go.

So my suggestion is to first pay attention to not overdressing or dressing in what often comes across as costume. Keep to the same level of formality as the other guests.

And second pick the colors of your accessories to go well each other and Let The Kilt Stand On Its Own.

    I wear the kilt because:
    Swish + Swagger = Swoon.
