A "first time out kilted" story: The library here has a irish gaelic class every Tuesday night which I do not attend but something happened that made me proud to wear the kilt. The teacher of the class always talks to his students after class about the (minute) differences between the different varieties of irish gaelic, but tonight I heard him talking in the same lecture-like mode of speech about the differences of scottish tartans and clans. As I was walking out of the library I heard him telling a student "don't waste your time with cotton, wool is best, there is nothing better than wool" presumably speaking about tartan fabrics. There was also a "sweet kilt bro!" from one of the students. I was happily shocked that a irish group would know so much about scottish kilts! The irish have used the kilt since the gaelic revival, and some say that the kilt is evolved from the irish brat. Overall I had a good reaction from the public today and only 2 odd stares from children and one "mommy why is he wearing a skirt". I find it interesting that kilts are so well known and worn here (I have seen 5 people in kilts since moving here 2 years ago) despite the fact that most people declare themselves as german here. (Another strange thing, since only about 1/15 surnames I see here are german.
