    I've worn sporran, with no belt, on several occasions. I find that I'll do so, most typically, with my "casual cut" kilts, which are designed to sit at the pants waist. With my traditionally cut (natural waist) kilts, I tend to wear a belt, as Artificer says, for the way it "lends a more finished look."

    Here's the only shot I have at the moment, sans belt. This is a Scotweb 5 yd "Casual" in Aberdeen District, taken while I was attending Herding Dog Trials at my friend's sheep farm. I think it works fine without a belt. (I did need to tighten up the strap to raise the sporran though, as you can see it sits too low at the time the shot was taken.)
