I wonder if 1836 was too early for kilt pins

That's a good question. I know that in The Highlanders Of Scotland (1860s) very few men are wearing them, and they're not in the shapes which became popular in the early 20th century, swords and the like, but rather round, like a miniature plaid brooches or cap badges.
