OK, first off, Hamish wins the prize for the best tartan joke of the month....
OK, so I'm not in the slightest bit Scots or Irish by heritage. My ancestry is English and Danish on my mothers side and French on my fathers. But it only stands to reason that I ought to be able to wear a tartan kilt if I want to. I figure it goes like this...
Anyof the non-family plaids or tartans that amerikilt or sport kilt or USA kilts, for example, offer up should be fine, right?
My Dad was US Navy, and there's a bunch of Navy heritage in my family, though I'm not a vet myself. I'd wear the US Navy tartan.
The California State tartan, based on the Muir family sett...sure, you bet, and I like it, too.
All Ireland Green and All Ireland Blue (I really like the blue)it seems like I ought to be able to wear that. Black Watch...anyone can wear that. The all Scotland tartan is great, that seems like fair game, too.
It seems to me that there are enough great looking tartans out there that I don't need to wear a clan tartan that I really don't have a connection to, eh?
Just my two cents.
BTW, there are a bunch of English "Halls" on my maternal grandmothers side of the family, and I wonder what the connection is to the Scottish Halls. Hmm.
