Interestingly, I'm at 42.9881 degrees north latitude, not really a very long way from the northern border of California at 42 degrees north. Canada's southernmost tip is actually just short of 42 degrees north, a shade to the south of California's northern limits, more if you look at a couple of islands.
Now, there are a lot of reasons why the climate varies between the two - the ocean, elevation, etc. etc., but it's an interesting geographic calculation.

We are a few hour drive South of the California/Oregon border. 60-70 miles south (straight line) of San Francisco. The beach is a 25 minute drive. If/when snow arrives, the level is about 1500ft. The only peaks above that around the bay are one North Bay, one in the East Bay, a few miles along a southern section of large hills, & the section of the Coastal Mountains where we are.
