Keep your boots on

Now this may seem obvious, or even irrelevant, but I always found it a real nuisance when wearing jeans with legs so narrow that they wouldn't slip over my boots,

I put my boots or shoes on then the kilt, old Marine Corps trick of not sitting in your good trousers before inspection to keep the wrinkles away. In the times when I am required to wear pants, it is usually a great shock to realize I can't get them on with my boots on.
