This may sound hokey... but spray paint works pretty good too. The stuff formulated for outdoor use such as BBQs and stoves works. Automotive paints work good too. Automotive vinyl dye in spray cans will coat just about anything permanently. If the boots start to look scruffy after a while... just paint 'em again.
